End of Trimester

Just a few updates...

The end of the second trimester is next week. The students will switch from Tech. Ed. to music for allied arts beginning the second week in March. There is a half day of school next Thursday, and no school for students on Friday, March 6th.

Language Arts

We just wrapped up our literature circle/movie books. The children are now working on a writing assignment where they compare and contrast the book and the movie. They are also beginning new listening to reading groups for The Watson's go to Birmingham, Shiloh, and Holes. In CAFE/Daily 5, we are currently working on a strategy for learning new words called "Use Word Parts". The children will learn about the meanings behind many common prefixes and suffixes.

The current essential vocabulary words that the children are studying this week include structure, refer, categorize, reflect, purpose, and inform.

Social Studies

We are finishing up our chapter on how Wisconsin became a state. The next chapter is all about immigration and migration. Keep an eye out for a parent/grandparent interview coming home soon.

Math

The chapter 5 math test will be this Thursday. I will be sending home the list of thinkcentral.com games that correlate with this chapter tomorrow. The test will cover metric measurement, customary measurement, elapsed time, word problems, area, and perimeter. The next unit will be on fractions.

Updates

Hello Everyone,

We are now well into February. The school year is more than half way over already! The kids are learning about measurement in math (both metric and customary). They just finished learning about the ocean in science and are now back into social studies. This unit is about how Wisconsin became a state. In writing, they are finishing their ocean animal reports and working on their pen pal letters to students in Spain.

All classes in our school are beginning to focus on learning key vocabulary words that all students need to know to be successful. The kids study 5 important vocabulary terms each week. After 3 weeks, they will be tested on their knowledge of the words.

This week is spirit week. Monday was hippie day, Tuesday was hat day, today is sports day, tomorrow is music day, and Friday is school color day. On Friday, we will be having a small Valentine's day celebration. The children are able to bring Valentines to hand out to the class if they would like. A pink sheet was sent home yesterday with all of the students names on it. Also, on Friday afternoon, the students will attend the faculty vs. student basketball game, which is always a great time!
